Overview: Black mountain is the tallest mountain on the shores of beautiful Lake George and the view from the summit of the entire 32 mile long lake is incredible. This hike will take you up Black Mountain and the down the west side of it to head into the remote wilderness on the east side of Lake George. You'll pass by several ponds and then head back to the original trail you came in on to get back to the car. Bring a camera.

Tips: Trailhead Directions:
From Whitehall, NY take Route 22 north. 4.5 miles north of where 22 crosses over the south bay of Lake Champlain take a left on the Hulett's Landing Road. Follow this road 2.7 miles to PIke Brook Road. You'll soon see a DEC sign and parking area on the right 3.5 miles from Rte. 22. There is no fee to park here.

Black Mountain Trailhead

Follow the trail to a road through the woods. Follow this road half a mile to a trail junction just before a private residence. Follow the small red DEC trail markers as the trail skirts right around the home and heads off into the woods. Make sure to follow the small red markers as snowmobile trails are also in the area.

Lapland Pond Trail Junction

You will see a trail heading off to the left towards Lapland Pond. Ignore this and continue on towards the summit.

Black Mountain Summit

At 2,646 feet you are at the summit of Black Mountain. There is a fire observers cabin, and a firetower and in recent years I think they have added antennas to the summit as well. Head over to the viewpoint for great views north up Lake George past the narrows. When you are done with photos head down the switchbacking trail towards POI #4.

Trail Junction

If you head downhill to the right you will head down towards the lake shore. Instead head left to skirt around Black Mountain Pond and Round Pond. You will pass a lean-to if you are interested in ever camping in this area.

Lapland Pond Junction

At this junction head north. You'll have another 2.2 miles to go before you get back to your car. Follow the blue markers on the trees now to get back to the original trail just west of the private residence at POI #2.
