Overview:
San Francisco personifies freedom. You're free to spend your precious vacation hours in a musty old prison, of course, but these day-trip ideas will have you looking beyond the bars.
The city's famous waterfront is a logical starting point -- put on your best walking shoes, wander down Market Street to the Clock Tower and hang a left. It's the best way to spend your first day in the city.
After that, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and check out the impressive coastline at the Marin Headlands, or tour the Immigration Station at Angel Island, home of the best view in the bay.
If you need more miles, head south on California Highway 1 for one of the best scenic drives in North America.
Tips:
If you're visiting during the work week, time your travels to miss morning and afternoon traffic (7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.). Weekends offer more freedom, but keep in mind a crush of traffic comes into the city every Saturday night.
Be ready for San Francisco's chilly weather -- shorts and T-shirts won't cut it if you're out near the ocean. Always have a jacket, and be ready for rain between November and March.
