Overview: Layered with history—from Hapsburg splendor to Art Nouveau—Vienna looks to the future, remaking itself as the center of a dynamic and expanding Europe. It’s still the city of Freud and Wittgenstein, Mozart, Schubert, Strauss, the Boys’ Choir, and the Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School. But now, as Vienna’s 21st-century renaissance takes hold, its contemporary scene is as much of a draw as its favorite son, Wolfgang Amadeus.

Tips: WHEN TO GO: Austria’s capital comes alive in November, readying for the holiday season with its first snowfall and increasingly brisk temperatures. Bundle up and experience this historical mecca through its many cultural fixtures—from Mozart to modern art and marvelous architecture.

Do & Co Hotel

The hotel occupies the top four floors of Haas Haus, a cylindrical, concrete-and-mirrored-glass postmodern landmark dropped into the heart of the centuries-old former capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Hans Hollein. The rooms and suites have dramatic curved walls and a dramatic Turkish-inflected interior, with silver filigree nightstands, kilim bedcovers, and a hammam-style spa. Why the detour to Asia Minor? Europeans love insider allusions, and Vienna was besieged by the Turks in 1529. Plus, Do & Co just happens to be owned by Istanbul native Attila Dogudan, a restaurant mogul known for his toffee-colored dining establishment in Stephansplatz. General manager Albrecht Clary says guests can expect the hotel’s room service menu to have "everything from schnitzel to sushi." Book the Bernie Suite for the best view in the house.

Fabio’s

Mingle with Vienna’s upper crust within the glass walls of Fabio’s, one of Vienna’s most popular and trendiest dining spots. Opened in 2002 by Fabio Giacobello (formerly of Italy’s famous Antinori wine company), the sleek restaurant draws in trendsetters and VIPs to dine at tables with black leather seats or to gather under soaring ceilings for drinks at the wine bar. Not to be outdone, of course, is the Mediterranean food that is prepared with the freshest ingredients, including seafood and poultry flown in daily. Chef Christoph Brunnhuber’s venison with sage gnocchi and crispy pork with orange pesto are among the standouts

Palais Coburg

Built atop the old walls of Vienna in the 1840’s, the former summer residence of Ferdinand von Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was turned into a hotel in 2003. The erstwhile palace is divided into 35 suites, each decorated in one of two styles: traditional (original moldings, grand swagged curtains) or contemporary (glass walls, angular furniture). The grounds make the hotel feel peaceful and removed, but all of Vienna’s top attractions—shopping, opera, museums—are just minutes away.
