Overview:
The hills east and west of San Jose, California, are brimming with excellent trails, but they often require hour-long drives to reach the trailheads. This bundle compiles the best hikes that are closest to the city center. A quick look at the locales:
Guadalupe River Park - While this urban trail system isn't remotely wild, it is nearby: right through the center of downtown San Jose.
Alum Rock Park - The best trails within the city limits are in this park on the city's eastern edge.
Santa Teresa County Park - Trails here climb hills overlooking the city's southern edge.
Almaden Quicksilver County Park - Get a glimpse of the time when San Jose was one of the world's largest sources of mercury.
Castle Rock State Park - The farthest afield of the group, this popular park will inspire further explorations of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Tips:
Always use sunscreen - most of these hikes are unshaded.
Bring plenty of water and snacks to sustain your energy level -- the hilly hikes can wear you out quickly if you're accustomed to flatland hiking.
Dress in layers -- cool mornings can turn into hot afternoons, and high ridges can be very windy.
Mind the wildlife warnings at trailheads -- rattlesnakes and mountain lions are extremely rare, but hikers see them occasionally. Make sure you know how to react.
