Overview: Calero County Park in the hills south of Silicon Valley has excellent hiking if your timing is right--and you don't mind the horses.

Most of the trails are multi-use, and the large corral near the trailhead is ample evidence this is primarily an equestrian park.

Even so, in the springtime it's one of the best wildflower-viewing destinations in the South Bay, and in winter the views from the park's high points are awesome.

This hike takes in these trails: Pena Trail > Javelina Loop (lower) > Cottle Trail > Chisnatuk Peak Trail > Bald Peaks Trail > Canada Del Oro Trail > Figueroa Trail

Tips: Chisnatuk Peak Trail is one of the best wildflower-spotting sites in the park from March through May.

The park is usually too hot to hike in during the summer.

Park contact: (408) 268-3883

Hours: 8 a.m. to sunset.

Driving directions: From Highway 101, take the Bailey Road exit and head west 2.7 miles to McKean Road. Turn left and follow the signs to the trail head.
