Help me pick a GPS

Postby agarwaln on Fri Jul 23, 2010 3:08 pm

Greetings!

I've spent the past couple weeks researching GPS devices and I'm at an utter loss of words. With quite a few to pick from and with countless features, I'm not quite sure which model is best suited for both my needs and budget. So what exactly do I need and what is my budget? Here goes...

I basically need a simple GPS device that can keep track of where I went (hiking, biking, driving, etc.), the average speed, total distance travelled, duration, elevation, etc. I don't need a device that gives me turn-by-turn directions - I have my iPhone and vehicle GPS for that. In the end, I just want to have the device track my outings so that I can then upload them to EveryTrail without any glitches. I'm not really looking into uploading other users' maps or trips to the GPS unit. However, if the device can do it within my budget, I'm ok with that. And as for the maps, I would like the device to be able to show me bodies of water, railroad tracks, etc. However, neither of those things are a deciding factor since it is more of a want.

The budget is where I'm being fairly tight. I really don't want to spend more than US$100 - US$150 (no more than 150 including shipping/tax/etc.). In other words, the cheaper the better.

As I mentioned, the ultimate goal is to input the data into EveryTrail and then see on the map where I went and some basic stats.

With that, what is the best device for me?

Hi,

For just recording the path I’ve walked I use the Amod Data Logger. It is just a tracker and nothing more.
All my trips on EveryTrail are made with this Amod Device.
I don’t know the price in the US, I paid about 60 euro’s.

grtz,

Hi,

Giving your budget, a device with map isn't possible i guess. If you aren't interested in looking at the current speed or height, then choose for a datalogger as Annelies mentioned. If you want to see some data during your track a garmin forerunner might be something you want. I have a forerunner 305. It is not the newest model so maybe you can find one within your budget range.

Forerunner 205 or 305.
Highly recommended!

Christmas came and gone, but Santa left me a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. I know it's not a super-fancy GPS device, but the price was extremely reasonable and it does quite a bit more than I was wanting. Frankly, my initial thought was that these types of GPS devices are quite unique when compared to GPS Navigation units (e.g. Garmin Nüvi series).

Quite pleased with it and I can't wait for warmer temps to be able to use it while hiking/walking & biking.
