Public and Private

Hello everybody,

It would be a nice feature if one could easily distinguish between trips marked public and those marked private when one is looking at a specific trip or looking at all of them under "My trips" and "Profile" (different font or background color, say, or italic title or something like that).

Right now, nothing distinguishes the ones from the others. The only way to tell whether a trip is marked private or public is click on "Edit description" for each trip.

I'd like to add that it would be good if you could mark a trip as private, but still be able to add your map to your blog without being told that it's private

I agree about the public private where you can post the link.. I think maybe calling it semi-private where you can share the trip, but it is not searchable from everytrail.

I would LOVE to have 3 statusses for created trips:
* hidden: only viewable by the creator
* private: only viewable when having a link (including secure key), Cfr Google's Picasa
* public: viewable by anyone

Hopefully something like this is a great step forward in the development of Everytrail and it's community!

Hello. I just joined via the EveryTrail app on my new iPhone. Overall, I like it! But I would like to add my vote for having some sort of visual identifier on the website indicating which trips are private. I'd also vote for some form of intermediate privacy option.

For intermediate privacy, you could have hard to guess URLs for sharing in blogs elsewhere (security through obscurity). But it would also be nice to have a concept of "friends" here on EveryTrail where your trips would only be visible to people who you have identified as your friends.

Finally, and the reason I started searching for information online about privacy settings in the first place, I would LOVE it if there were a field right in the iPhone app for determining whether the trip is private or not. Right now, it's public until you go into the website and make it private. At a minimum, I would like the default to be the other way around. (You could have a default configuration setting in the app itself to reverse this.) Or you could simply have a radio button for setting privacy level for each trail you upload -- just like you can define a title, description, etc. before you upload each trip.

We've added a feature that addresses some of the suggestions mentioned in this thread:

For private trips you can now generate a link that makes it accessible to people you choose to share that trip with. Just click the "email this trip to friends" link and the email will contain a link with a code that makes the private trip accessible to others.

For the iPhone the next release will have the option to make trips private upon upload.

I've just bought the iPhone app, and tried uploading some trails.

I can't see an option there for making trips private during upload - is this still planned or am I missing something obvious?

There should be a little lock symbol next to your private trips when viewing your list of trips. As for creating trips on the iPhone, there should be an option on the save screen after the story (public on/off).
