Most of the time I use the iPhone because it is the most convenient way for me. Due to the fact that I love to go hiking and backpacking I bought the new Garmin Montana and I am very happy with it. It is such a great device. If you are thinking about buying a multi functional GPS device I can really recommend this one.

I’ve had a Garmin Montana 600 in hand for a couple of weeks now and so far I’m pretty impressed with it. I initially thought it was targeted at the motorized crowd (ATVs, 4WDs, etc.) due to its size, but now I’m not so sure.

I use an iPhone 4 with the MotionX-GPS app. I like the Everytrail app but would rather upload my tracks to Everytrail at my discretion as many tracks don't track well in the locations I travel in (deep canyons). Iphone works much better and has more options than the standalone gps devices I have used.
I've noticed that most of the replies on this post indicate using a Gramin or other GPS specific device. I've only been at this for a little less than a year and have been using an iPhone4s and plan to use a Samsung Galaxy Tablet on my next trip. I went the iphone route becuase I didn't want to have to keep up with multiple devices and the app is so easy to use. Just curious what the added benefits are from using a GPS specific devices over a mobile device app.
