Cannot automatically place photos although timestamps OK

Postby wealthychef on Mon Apr 23, 2012 8:18 am

Hi, I cannot place photos automatically sometimes.
The Help on placing photos states,
If your GPS file and your photos all have correct timestamps, then you must adjust the offset either manually, or by placing one of the photos in the correct location, clicking on the pin, and selecting “update other photos”. This should update all locations, and save the offset for future use.

When I use the photo placement feature, there is no "update other photos" button anywhere that I could see. I'm definite about one of the photos and can place it correctly -- don't want to place all photos by hand -- that's tedious. Timestamps should be correct.

thanks

Go to your trip page and click on the "see all pictures and videos" link above the comment section at the very bottom. Click on one of the pictures and then click on the Edit Picture link above the picture. Check to see if you have the right timestamp. If not, there should be something wrong for the EXIF data in your picture. You can enter the right timestamp here and auto locater again.

If you are importing from Picasa, this may have been the problem (read last post: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3331)

I think I know what is happening here. I edited the photos using iPhoto on a Mac. This creates duplicates with new dates, and these are what got uploaded. iPhoto shows the date and time from the master (original) photo, but when I uploaded, the photo that gets sent seems to not have that info. Here is what I saw when I asked for the photo info:

Exposure time: 1/152
FNumber: f/2.8
ISO: 80
Focal length: 77mm
Make: Apple
Model: iPhone 4

No date!

I tried uploading the "Masters" but I cannot get EveryTrail to respect their locations! For the Masters, the time stamp is accurate. There is no geotagging data because my iPhone is in airplane mode on hikes to save the battery. But "auto place all" should work here and doesn't...

Now I'm even more mystified. Why isn't the date being used when doing "auto place?"

OK, problem solved. I think Everytrail's user interface for managing photos is terrible, BTW. Anyhow, the trick is to go to "Edit pictures and videos", then "Edit Locations and Descriptions", then "Reset All" near the top of the page, then "Auto Place All", then click on one photo that you know the location of, click "Reset" right next to the photo, then "Map It" button next to photo, then click where the image was taken, then IN THE MAP, click on the point you just set, and click "Update Offset based on this picture."
I've got to rant now:
Everytrail, read what I just wrote and ask yourself, can we improve this experience? There are three completely separate places for managing photos, each with hard to use and slow interfaces. Can you please fix all this crap?
Thanks!
