Uploading GPS

My GPS file will not upload, help!

There may be several reasons for this, here are the most common we have seen:

- The file is too large: we support up to 8MB file uploads. If you file is larger than this (or even close to the limit), try to use a program such as GPSBabel to first simplify the track, and then upload the smaller file. In our experience, you do not need a file that is 8MB in size to see a good track. If your file is not in .gpx format, there is a lot of extra data saved, and you may decrease the size by converting to .gpx format (using GPSBabel) and not lose any of the points. We show 400 points per track on the map, otherwise the maps behave slowly, so you will likely not even notice the difference.

- There is no data in the file: believe it or not, but some people accidentally upload the wrong file, or a partial file that is not finished for some reason, please check the file again before emailing us.

- Incorrect character encodings: If any of your file is in a different language (track names, waypoint names, etc.) it may not be properly encoded. Accents and umlauts usually cause this to break, because they are not UTF-8 encoded. We have seen this in several files generated by other programs. You can either open the file in a text editor and save it again, specifying the character set as UTF-8 (if possible), or remove all accents and umlauts and other characters that may cause problems. We support all languages on the site, but we cannot open files that are improperly encoded, nothing personal.

- You are uploading a .kmz or .kml file: If you are uploading a .kmz or .kml file, please check the file contents. Often there is nothing in the file except for a link to another file. The parser can only look at the contents within the file itself, which appears to have no GPS data. If this is the case, find the link in the file and download that file instead and try to upload it, it should work.

- If you are still having problems, please email us as gps-files@everytrail.com, and include the original file, we will do our best to figure out the problem.

How do I add another track to an existing trip?

Currently you can upload a new GPS file to an existing trip by going to the edit map page and selecting "upload file".

Right now you cannot add an existing track to an existing trip. This is currently on our list of enhancements. However, you can draw directly on the map of your existing trip as described above. Or, you can create a new trip and include the new tracks with the tracks on the existing trip.

Editing Tracks/Waypoints

My track is incorrect, how do I edit it?

If your track has points that are off, or recorded for too long, you can go to the edit map page for your trip and edit the track. You can add points, remove points, or select a larger section and remove all points within that area. Follow the instructions on the edit map page to edit the track.

Adding Pictures/Video

I cannot upload pictures from my computer

We place a limit of around 8MB per picture. If your pictures are below this limit, please email us 1 of the photos that you are uploading along with the id of the trip you can just copy and paste the url in the browser address bar). Send the email to support@everytrail.com with the subject “photos do not upload”. We will look into the problem and address it as soon as we can.

How can I reorder my pictures

We show the pictures in the order they were taken, so that they are shown in a natural order when viewing the slideshow. If the timestamps are off (or you used multiple cameras) you can reorder the photos by changing the timestamps of the pictures. To do this, go to your “My Photos” page, found from your profile, or from the picture detail page for any picture (you should see an edit link if you are logged in). Change the time of the picture, and the sequence will change.

I imported videos from YouTube and they are all at the end of the trip

We order all media by creation date, however YouTube does not look at the creation date of videos when you upload them, and instead assigns the date uploaded (which is usually after you took the rest of your pictures). You can change this by going to the edit video page and changing the date there.

All of my pictures appear at the start of the trip

This is likely because the time offset between your GPS device and camera has not been set, or is incorrect. If you drew your track by hand, there will be no time information in the track for us to use to match up the pictures. If this is the case, you must manually place the photos, sorry.

If your GPS file and your photos all have correct timestamps, then you must adjust the offset either manually, or by placing one of the photos in the correct location, clicking on the pin, and selecting “update other photos”. This should update all locations, and save the offset for future use.

How do I post photos to an existing trip?

1. Login and click on the "My Trips" tab at the top of the page.
2. Find the trip you want to edit and click on the "Edit Pictures" link under the trip name.
3. You will now see the "Several easy ways to add photos!" page. You have 4 options to choose from.
a. Upload from your computer: click the "Browse" button and then locate the image file on your computer that you want to upload. You can upload 4 files at a time, but each file should be less than 4 MB. Once your files are selected and appear in the text boxes, click the "Upload Now" button. Note: this may take a few minutes if you have multiple large files. Of course you are encouraged to upload more than 4 photos so please just repeat this step until all of your photos are uploaded. If you are experiencing extremely long wait times when uploading multiple large photos, try uploading them one or two at a time.
b. Import from Flickr: click the "Import from Flickr" link. Note: you will be asked to login to Flickr on the next page in order to import your photos. After logging in, click on the desired photoset and then select the individual photos you want to import. Click the "Import" button at the bottom of the page when finished. c. Include your existing photos: select each of your existing photos that you want to include with this trip.
d. Include photos from other users: we will show you photos from other users that are nearby this location. Select each of the photos you want to include with this trip.
4. Click the "Continue" button at the top of the page when done adding photos by any of the ways (a,b,c,d) described above.

How do I delete existing photos?

Go do the edit pictures page and uncheck any picture you do not want in your trip. When you are done, click the "continue" button to save your trip.

You can remove existing photos from your account by going to your "my photos" page from your profile page. NOTE: deleting photos from your account will remove them from all existing trips as well.

I have geotagged my photos on my computer, but the website is not recognizing the location information

There are several applications for adding gps information to photos on your computer, and many save the location information in the correct EXIF data. However, some applications save the information in application-specific tags, which are only used by that location. This may be the case if you know you have already added location information. If this has happened to you, please email 1 photo to support@everytrail.com and provide the name of the application you used to geotag the photos.

Also note: if you resize the pictures after adding GPS information, you will sometimes lose that information.

How do I make a trip public/private?

If you click “edit description” you will go to the Tell Story page. Next to where you can edit the trip title, there is a toggle between public and private trips. Public trips appear in search results and anyone can see them, public trips are for your eyes only, or anyone you share the private link with.

Why do these extra location names appear on my trip? I didn’t enter them.

We add geonames to all trips based on nearby locations. The purpose of these geonames is to help with searching.
