South Limburg
Welcome to the sunny south! South Limburg is literally the ’highpoint’ of the Netherlands. What a pleasure it is to spend time in this land of hills and valleys. South Limburg is quite a contrast to the Netherlands one is accustomed to and there is so much to do here as well.
Wonderful walks and welcome rest Hiking boots are a must for anyone coming to South Limburg. The region’s hills are a paradise for walkers and are not to be missed. Trails criss-cross woodland and meadows, past grazing cattle, along murmuring brooks with water mills and age-old farmsteads. Breathtaking views are the reward for a steep ascent and one can usually find a terrace or inn close by where local delicacies can be sampled along with ’Koffie met Vlaai’*. You would like to taste South Limburger wine? No problem, there really is such a thing!
*coffee with Dutch cake, e.g. tart with rice pudding or apple, cinnamon, raisins, apricot compote.
Travelling through time
One thing is certain: South Limburg still feels very much alive, even though this fertile region has been populated for many centuries. The Romans, for example, built a bathhouse in Heerlen, now part of the Roman Baths Museum. Magnificent churches bejewel the ancient monastic town of Sittard, whilst the remnants of a centuries-old fort, one of several in the area, rise up proudly above the mergel settlement of Valkenburg aan de Geul. At the Kasteel Hoensbroek, meanwhile, one has the feeling that the lord of the castle has just departed in haste... fascinating museums can also be found here, or you can take a ride on the ,Million Guilders‘ line, a steam railway puffing through the scenery – and even head underground into the caves, watching history come to life!
Feel like doing something different?
How sporting or challenging you want your programme to be is entirely up to you. Follow the path of famous racing cyclists and take on the Cauberg, or use any one of the many cycle trails on more level ground. Shoot down the hills on steel wires, try your hand at archery or canoeing. Book yourself a trip in a hot air balloon or take a boat trip on the ’Maasplas’ at Eijsden. Of course, you could just enjoy a leisurely shopping trip, or visit one of the area’s many other attractions: the zoo or the ,Mondo Verde‘ world gardens? Amusement park or health spa? Fairytale forest or labyrinth? Casino or theatre? Spoiled for choice in the best possible way...
