Attempting the 3 Peaks challenge at this time of year requires an early start and an early finish if you want to avoid a trudge back in the dark. The walk is reasonable strenuous and involves 2 step accents with some scrambling (Pen-Y-Ghent & Ingleborough and 1 long accent to Whernside. We started a the Golden lion Pub in Horton where you are offered day parking for £1.00 and is a great place to...

Our favourite walk in the Dales, Ingleborough from Clapham. Weather was mild but very hazy with low cloud frequently hiding Inglebrough.

A fantastic walk through some beautiful limestone scenery. The whole area is criss-crossed with paths giving many alternative options. A bright sunny day but spoilt by a very strong cold wind.

Up Ingleborough from Clapham

A blazing hot June day.  Too hot to stagger up Ingleborough really but it was a good clear day.  Lots of good views all around if a bit hazy in the distance.  I have an old copy of Wainwright's 'Walks in Limestone Country' so I was following a couple of his walks to see if everything was still the same.  Wainwright says 'Of the many walks described in this book, the ascent...

Grassington is a pretty village to visit, but the cafe's are a bit pricey and close at 5 ish. Parking and toilets are good at the national park site, just out of the village on the Pateley Bridge road. £4 for all day parking.
There are various routes up the hill out of the village. Needs care to get the one you want, but if you get it wrong, it is easy, if time consuming to get back on track.
The feature of this walk are the old lead mines on the moor above Grassington and hebden. The old smelting flume up to the chimney at the top of the hill is an interesting feature well worth investigating. Note that there are lots of mine shafts that are not covered or marked, so don't wander off the footpaths without watching where you are going. Some shafts are 90 m deep !
The route north is a bit of a drag, but with graet views to the south wets to pendel hill, and up the wharfe valley. Turning east, the route drops down a steep track into some delightful Limestone pavement, then takes a left down the Dales way back into Grassington. Very nice bit of path.
enjoy.

Another fantastic day out in the Dales. Had chance to summit Great Whernside in good (well, slightly improved) weather this time before heading back into Kettlewell via the old Top Mere Road for a cheeky pint.
