Humphrey's Peak Summit (Flagstaff, AZ)

Flagstaff, Arizona, United States
4.9 miles
This trail begins at the North end of Arizona Snowbowl in the dense forest.  The air was cool and moist, with earthy scents of pine and juniper.  Lazy clouds drifted over, as noisy birds gawked eachother.  We began our ascent toward the summit.  The canopy of the trees engulfed the forest floor.  Squirls and chipmunks danced and flirted around the base of huge pines.  The trail was steep and scattered with living...

1.0 miles
This is one of many trails within the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument just outside of Flagstaff, Arizona. There is a short paved path from the parking lot that leads to a 1-mile loop around a lava field. You'll get great views of Humphreys Peak from the loop.

Two Willderness Mystery part 1

What does the narrow corridor between the two parts of the Strawberry Crater Wilderness Area look like?  Why is it here? I got instructions from the volunteer at Sunset Crater.  The Forest roads are not mapped and marked identically.  I followed the most traveled track. The volunteer mentioned that "Dead man's Mesa is aptly named. " They have found bodies out there!"

So I got my arthritic body all jazzed up on the last of my pain prescription and went for it.  This is the last part of the hike.  I went clockwise around the old volcano.  A hole in the rim probably formed when a chunk of soft rock got surrounded by hot ignious material eroded over the years and made a window.  I hereby name the window in the rock, atop the rim of Strawberry Crater, Chuck's Arch! Charles Bates...

Strawberry Crater Wilderness Mystrery pt.I

Why is Strawberry Crater Wilderness in two parts?  Is the narrow gap between the two parts for "trammeling?" RFC has a picture of lots of presumably ATV tracks located in the wilderness?   Is his picture accurately paced?

Krista and I decided to spend our New Years in Flagstaff. We spent New Years Eve downtown and watched the Great Pine Cone Drop at the Hotel Weatherford. The following day we decided to head to the Nordic Center to try Cross Country Skiing. We did that in the morning, then we traded in our skis for snow shoes and spent the afternoon snowshoeing.

We have found ourselves at the bottom of this crater a few different times. The weather was warm on this day and we figured there would be no snow out this way. We grabbed lunch and headed out. When we arrived the old sign that kept folks from driving up the adjoining hill was gone. This allowed us to get a lot closer than previous times we had been out here. This is...

Sunset Crater - Waputki Ruins Loop

The Wupatki, Sunset Crater road takes a while, ison a pleasant break from the straight Cameron road and the Flagstaff Interstate experience. There is camping at Sunset crater and in the National Forest. The Strawberry Crater Wilderness area is stark, black cinders and little vegetation. The Strawberry Crater itself is best approached from US 89 on a sketchy forest road. The Sinagua culture flourished after the last Sunset Crater eruption some 600 years ago.
