When you're tired of sitting on a bus and touring Southern Zion, drive North on I-15 to the Kolob Canyon portion of Zion. Check-in at the ranger station to get a permit to hike the backcountry. The first 7 miles are a moderately difficult hike. The last half to three-quarters mile is strenuous.
Big. Massive. Whatever else anyone says about Kolob Canyons, it is the shear size of these canyons that make my heart pound. But getting there is not half the fun, it's more like 90%. Very few trails inhabit this section of the park, which by definition, make this a backcountry route haven.
