Taichung (traditional Chinese: 臺中市/台中市; simplified Chinese: 台中市; Tongyong Pinyin: Táijhōng Shìh; Hanyu Pinyin: Táizhōng Shì; Wade-Giles: T'ai-chung-shih; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tâi-tiong-chhī) is a city located in west-central Republic of China (Taiwan) with a population of just over one million people, making it the third largest city on the island after Taipei andKaohsiung. The city presently constitutes a provincial city apart from the adjacent Taichung County. By the end of 2010 the city and county, both currently first-level divisions of Taiwan Province, will merge to form a single direct-controlled municipality.[5] The name Taichungmeans "Central Taiwan."
