Located in the town of Pacifica, California, the site of the discovery of San Francisco Bay consists of the point at which the Portola Expedition, 1769, crossed over Sweeney Ridge, and for the first time, came to view one of the world’s largest sheltered anchorages. From the top of Sweeney Ridge one can see not only inland to the Bay, but north along the ocean coast as far as Point Reyes. No structures are on the site nor...

Sweeney Ridge GGNRA Night Hike

A little night time hike with a friend in Sweeney Ridge GGNRA along Sneath Lane Trail from the Sneath Lane Trailhead. It had been a rainy day and a misty night, but the Sneath Lane Trail is paved so we didn't have to worry about tripping over roots or deep mud. We saw a brave little banana slug and the leg remains of a fawn--probably from a coyote or mountain lion kill.Read...

Picked a perfect day to make this very scenic hike from the Sneath Lane entrance. Normally it would likely be windy and cold at the top of the ridge. This November day it was 71 degrees and very clear with views to Point Reyes and the Farallon islands. The view from the ridge includes the bay, the ocean, San Francisco, Crystal Springs reservoir and more. An abandoned Nike Missile site and a historical San Francisco bay discovery...

It was a sunny morning but I was a bit late and a cloud rose above the ridge. The second part of the trail was muddy. The sun came out eventually and the last part of the I got to see some nice scenery. The trail goes around a county jail.

From the parking lot  follow the Montara Trail towards Montara Mountain. After climbing 700 feet for ~1.3 miles you reach a bench. Take a little rest and enjoy the gorgeous view of the ocean in the distance. Now follow Brooks Falls Trail for about ~0.7 miles. On the way way you pass another bench where you can take another rest and watch the Brook Falls. Make a right at the junction to...

Anniversary Hike

It's our 22nd wedding anniversary and as a tradition for these last few years, we go for a hike.  This year --- it's Montara mountain.  In summer Pacifica is often foggy, windy and cold.  But fall is the perfect time to hike this trail.  The clear skies and the terrain provide wonderful view of the ocean and surrounding area.
