Springtime is fabulous at Sunol Regional Wilderness in the Diablo Range in the East Bay northeast of San Jose and southeast of San Francisco. Wildflower season should take off in the next few weeks. For this trip I focused on the water features: Alameda Creek in the ambitiously titled Little Yosemite area of the park, and the W. Tree Rock Scramble, which offers an excellent introduction to scrambling, though I got fed up...

Aside from losing my cell phone somewhere along the way and spending over an hour picking 15 (so far) ticks out of Sheila's coat, this was an unexpectedly neat hike.  The trail doesn't seem to be used too much as in some places the grass totally covered the trail. The hills were surprisingly green for this time of year and there were lots of different wild flowers to see. A pair of...

Spring is a great time to enjoy the fun of playing water and boulder jumping at Little Yosemite,  Sunol Regional Wilderness. The area is overflown with water and plenty of it. Plus, a cute lizard doing push-ups tried to warm people off its territory. This is a easy one-mile hike to get there from the parking lot at the end of Geary Road.  Just follw the main road after the gate, hike about one mile, and find the trail on the right...

Flag Hill Loop - Sunol Regional Wilderness
by Vaudesir on Apr 17, 2010
3.7 miles
Sunol Regional Wilderness is a beautiful park, and Spring is the best time to explore it. It can be very muddy in winter, and scorching hot in the summer. I was looking for an interesting hike (more than 3miles, with some elevation) that we could do with kids (5 and 7). Looking at the map, it seemed that climbing up to Flag Hill would be fun.Emilie, Prahlad, Jen, and Collin met us...

Maguire Peaks Loop Hike: Sunol Regional Wilderness EBRPD

Scotts Corner, California, United States
4.7 miles
Maguire Peaks is located at the northern corner of Sunol Regional Wilderness, a remote area with considerably lesser visitors than the main part of the park. Below the peak, a loop trail (3.1 miles long), Maguire Peaks Loop Trail, encircles the area. The scenery on the loop trail is beautiful, and the vistas from several vantage points are superb, especially views on San Antonio Reservoir are just amazing.  There is no clear path to the summit....

10.8 miles
This hike was a strenuous 10.8 mi hike with and elevation gain of 2875ft. Sunol Regional Wilderness an out of the way park that is easy to get to. Ranching continues to be an activity here. During the weekday, there hardly ever seems to be anyone about. Starting from the park visitor center (about 410ft) , we hiked up the flag hill trail to the top of Flag hill (1360ft). This trail...

Just recently visited Sunol for the first time. I didn't realize that this hike was almost all out in the open. The day we went it was very dry, and mid 80s so it made this a very hot hike. I plan to try this hike again, but it won't be until late winter, early spring. Not sure what the total length of the hike was, but it took us about 3.5 hours round trip. Also finished off my 80oz camelbak! The view from the top is pretty, especially if you like hills, you also can see a bit of the bay in the distance.

5 stars, in spite of the injury. ;)

After searching EveryTrail, we decided we'd like to try to follow edgarstiles trip. So, from the main parking area we walked up the road a bit to Camp Ohlone Road. We followed this across a bridge and then to a cattle grid. We started to cross the cattle grid and realized it would be too difficult for our dog. That's when my wife's foot slipped and her left leg fell through the grid and she fell backwards. She was really lucky she didn't break her leg. After a few minutes she was able to get up and continue the hike. After she got up we noticed there was a gate to the right of the cattle grid. Lesson learned.

With that adventure behind us, we continued down Camp Ohlone Road and then took a left onto Cerro Este Road at the Little Yosemite area. We continued up Cerro Este Road to the summit. From here there are great views of the Calaveras Reservoir and surrounding area.

Not long after the summit we took a left onto Cave Rocks Road and took this to Indian Joe Creek Trail. This was all downhill and pretty steep at times. At the bottom we had a brief encounter with some cows that were on the trail. Not near the trail, but ON THE TRAIL, so we couldn't go around them. We slowly headed through them and one of them got spooked by our dog and almost charged us. This in turn spooked our dog and she started freaking out. But we eventually made it out of the area.

Finally we took the short Indian Joe Nature Trail back over to Canyon View Trail and that completed our hike.

Great Park! Lots of Wilderness.
When combined with EBRPD Mission Peak and Del Valle Regional Park, allows for a 28 mile one-way hike while crossing only one public road(Calaveras).
