Four day backpacking trip up to the Cottonwood basin. Hiked to all the Cottonwood lakes as well as Muir Lake. We actually only hiked in 3.5 miles to just under 10400 feet (1.5 miles below lakes) where we could still have fires, then did day hikes up to the lakes.
Due to battery issues, GPS track is one way...Full write-up on the trip:http://tmeekins.blogspot.com/2011/09/mt-whitney-sept-16-24-2011.html
Great loop and view of Mulkey Meadows. You follow the PCT over to Cottonwood Trail and down. Some moderate switchbacks but nothing too scary.
What a beautiful area. Nice trails, some little switchbacks but otherwise, mild grade climb and wonderful scenic area.
This trip we left Sacramento around 5:30pm. Stopped in Polluck Pines to have dinner at a chinese restaurant there. The fortune cookie said "Now is the time to set your sights high and go for it" How fitting! We arrived in Lone Pine around midnight and proceeded to drive up the long switchbacks on Horseshoe Meadow Rd. Once in Horseshoe Meadows we parked at the Cottonwood Lakes trailhead. The lot was about half...
Initial PlanThe initial plan for this trip was for it to be an epic 4-peak day hike. We were to summit Mt. Carillon, take the ridge east to Mt. Russell, and across the Russell-Whitney saddle to the north face of Whitney. Finally we would take the main Whitney trail back to the trail head and climbing Muir on the way. Alas, it wasn't mean to be. The chosen route for Mt. Carillon...
Another year, another hike up Whitney. We had planned to go the Mountaineers Route this year, but record snow and cold weather meant we had to settle for a day hike up Whitney following the traditional Whitney Trail. We took 3 Scouts with us on this one and all three summited. Hard to express how proud I was of them, they put in a lot of work training. We definitely took our time....
13,845 ft, ~6,000ft of gain, somewhere between 11-14 miles in length (we're not sure...). Climbed with Dave and Ken. We left at 7am and returned around 7:30pm. Dave got some fierce altitude sickness, but fortunately summited before losing his lunch/breakfast. There was a nice ice field of about 2,000 ft that was in perfect shape for climbing. Overall there was a lot of trail pounding with minimal scrambling/climbing.Photos came from:http://kathywing.smugmug.com/California-Hiking-Scrambling/Sierra-Nevada-Hiking/Mount-Mallory-13845-9608/5905307_p28wDH#!i=367307188&k=3DQwd
