The Magruder Corridor (MC) is a 100 + mile single-lane 'primitive'
road running essentially between Elk City, Idaho and Conner, Montana, situated between
the Bitterroot-Selway Wilderness (to the north) and Frank Church - River of No
Return Wilderness (to the south). It is
named after Lloyd Magruder who was murdered with four other members of his
party for his gold in October 1863. With
the exception of a small stretch of payment on the eastern end of the...

The Selway River is a one of the premier river runs in the US. It is very difficult to get a permit (only 60 issued each year), but the trip is awesome. We only saw briefly one other group. The rest of the time it was like we were in a different world. We did a 7 day trip, but many people do it in less. We found that even 7 days was...
While camping on the beautiful Selway River, we ATVed to two forest fire lookout locations. The first location, Fog Mountain, is the historic location of a lookout that was first developed in 1924. A tower was constructed in 1935 but it was abandoned in 1950. Today all that remains is the foundation. The second location is at Indian Hill. This cabin was constructed in 1928 and is still used for storage. The 41 foot wooden tower...
In preparation for a week long ATV trip across the Magruder Corridor, we arrived in Elk City a day early. This gave us time to seek out the former forest fire lookout site on Blackhawk Mountain. Only the foundation of the original wooden tower remains today. In fact it is a strange to find a lookout site with no views of the surrounding country. A thick stand of trees have grown up...
This ride was the first day of the sixth installment of our mostly-annual Rolling Thunder outing. This was the first time we went motorized, trading in our mountain bikes for motorcycles and hitting the remote Magruder Corridor in Idaho. After leaving Grangeville where we stayed in a motel overnight, we headed into the Nez Perce National Forest and up the Magruder until we reached a suitable campsite at Mountain Meadows Campground. We quickly...
This was day 2 and the final day of riding for our Rolling Thunder crew. We ended up losing can of gas off of my bike when it was jettisoned at some point between Green Mountain and Poet Creek Campground and we spent almost an hour riding back up and down the road looking for it. That delay and the lack of spare gas meant that we didn't make it as far...
