Community Trips
You walk on a small road that goes to the old mines in the mountains. About 2 miles in you can either go to the Opal Creek Trail or continue up the road to Jawbone Flats. Both ways will get you to Opal Creek, yes there's actually a very small community that lives at the top. The Opal Creek Trail is a moderate hike that goes about 2 miles and ends at...
The ten major waterfalls at Silver Falls State Park are well known. On this walk we shortcutted the two north falls to reduce the walk from ten miles to six, and then drove over to see them. The path goes behind several of the falls.
This is beautiful hike especially when the wildfilowers are in bloom-- Late spring to early summer. Once at top of Iron Mountain, you can see Mt Hood, Mount St Helens, Mt Jefferson, Mt Washington, Three Sisters, Diamond Peak on a clear day... The start of trail is pretty much up hill all the way... 2000 ft climb in about 1.7 miles
A beautiful trip to view most of the 10 waterfalls in the park. The weather was great, but somewhat humid. The trail was in good shape and we were surprised at how many people were out today. We had lunch directly below the double falls, which turned out to be a popular spot as you could rest on logs in the creek and enjoy the mist wafting over our faces.
Hartz, Jon Stevens, Chris Holm and I climbed up Cone Peak in Santiam Pass on Saturday. We had no idea of how much snow was left on the mountains in the pass but we hoped there was enough to get some turns on. Chris Holm had already packed up his gear thinking the season was over.. and it sure looked like it on our way up the Southwest Ridge of Cone Peak....
Today I went for a hike up Iron Mountain with Ashley Hatfield and my roomate Jason Killian along who brought McKenzie along. I had gotten up early and went to Firestone to have 4 brand new tires put on my truck. I got the Bridgestone AT Dueler Revo's, a sick tire that performs amazingly in wet conditions ie, the Pacific Northwest. Thus, I was anxious to test them out so I opted...
Yesterday I kayaked down a section of the North Santiam River just east of Mill City, OR with my fellow new COAS grad students. It was Robyn, Esther, Anna, Eleanor, Bart, myself and Greg who organized the event. We had rented inflatable kayaks from the Outdoor Rec Center at OSU for the day and took his party van, and my truck to shuttle us between the launch and the pick-up. We put...
Today Emily and I wanted to get out of town and go for a hike so we decided to head to Santiam Pass and go for a short hike. We looked in my book of hikes in the area and chose a 4.2mile roundtrip hike up Middle Pyramid. I had to go to work at 4pm so we had to be down from the mountain by 2pm for me to make it...
