My girlfriend and I hiked the trans-catalina trail on Christmas weekend. Rain and wind couldn't stop a record number of competitors from racing in the Buffalo Run Half Marathon on Catalina Island in 2010. The course was muddy and memorable.

Took boat to Avalon.. then spent night at hermit Gulch.. about 1.5 miles from Avalon.the time is wrong on this gps track... took us about 7 hours...In morning headed to blackjackFirst 2 miles were brutal up hill, then not too bad.Got many different stories about routes and water from various rangers.You can get water at the playground where the trans Catalina trail crosses airport road. A nice hike to see Cat Harbor from a high point, and see some of the back side of the island. Started at the campground, and ended at the town. We did this in the late afternoon for cooler breezes. We came across a bison feeding near the trail. We learned that this guy waits near the gate for a car to open it and then comes though to feed on this...
Hiked the entire Trans-Catalina Trail on Friday, April 2 through Sunday, April 4th, then hiked the short route back to Two Harbors to catch the ferry home. A incredible hike, and a bit of a stretch for four days. Full trip report is at SoCal Hiker.net
