Three night trip down the Lost Coast in California. The hiking through sand and rock took more of a toll on my knees and feet than I expected, but it was still an amazing adventure. Read about it on my blog.
After leaving a car at Mattole trailhead the prior day, we set out from the Black Sands Trailhead at 9:30am. The weather was sunny and calm. The common wisdom is to hike the Lost Coast Trail north to south to keep the wind at your back, but one of our party had already hiked it in that direction before, so we decided to go the opposite way. Plus we figured upon completion, it would be easier...
Took a two night trip (three if you count camping at Mattole) to Cooskie Creek. While there we hiked up Cooskie creek to the Cooskie Creek Trail and took it up and over Lake and Spanish Ridges, returning down the Spanish Ridge trail to Randall creek and on up the beach back to camp. We got a little rain going in, then beautiful weather for the remainder. Quite an amazing trip!Full trip...

(3 days/ 2 nights)The long hike down the loose, rocky sand proved to be quit tiresome but with no shortage of interesting things to see and hear. Along with the monstrous waves, pulling heavy rocks in and out with every roar, we saw loads of sea...
This was an awesome bike trip. It is not what we originally had planned, but we kind of stubbled into it when we found ourselves in Shelter Cove looking for a bike ride. The BLM manages the trail. Here is their info:http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/arcata/kingrange/mountain_bike_trail.htmlIt is a 14 mile single track trail through the North Coast forest. You can drive to the trail head, but we didn't have a car, so we had to ride...
It was a wet weekend on the Lost Coast this year, but we still had a great time and marveled at the beauty in spite of the sun not coming out until we were on our final leg of the return hike out.Full trip report here: http://www.alwaysjanuary.blogspot.com/2011/05/lost-coast-gloom.html
