This is an 8 mile moderate hike with a 1800 ft elevation change.Rancho Canada del Oro is a relatively new (2004) open space park located in south San Jose, Ca. The park consists of over 8 miles of connected trails and also connects with Calero county park for even more hiking. We started at the parking lot (facilities / maps available) and proceeded on the Mayfair Ranch trail. A nice hike with my daughter in Rancho Canada this afternoon.  We managed to get in a mini hike but turned back short of our goal with foreboding black clouds coming in.  We were searching for salamanders and newts but ended up with just a milliepede find which was fine as Alex was entirely thrilled with that. Love this park... usually not very busy and puts on some great flower and wildlife shows most every...

A quick hike in beautiful Rancho Canada del Oro OSP on a late afternoon, hoping to see the first tarantulas of the season.Rancho Canada del Oro is a great little park, not very well known, located in the south of Santa Clara county, between Uvas and Calero. It is remote and thus less crowded than other parks. From the parking lot, I took the Mayfair Ranch trail, which is a (relatively) new and...

Woke up earlier than the ranger so I was the first into the park this morning.  On the way up to the park I saw the most Turkeys I've ever seen on Casa Loma Rd,  probably over 100 of them in three different groups.  Two males were strutting their stuff and putting on a good show for the ladies.  Once in the park proper I didn't see as much wildlife down in the lower meadows...

Inspired by Vaudesir's Bald Peaks Trail here on EveryTrail, we ventured out south to the Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve today. The six of us thoroughly enjoyed the hike a part of which runs along the actively flowing Baldy Ryan Creek. Something about the sound of free flowing water amidst shady oaks and wildflowers... I just don't have the words to capture what we all experienced on this trail today.The...

Rancho Cañada Del Oro

This hike utilizes trails in 2 different Santa Clara County Parks which are adjacent to each other. Rancho Cañada Del Oro, and Calero. This location is close to our home, and we use this route frequently for a quick hike when we don’t want to drive very far. It’s tucked away in the south San Jose foothills just far enough away to be nice and quiet, but not a long drive. Grassy...
