This is one of our favorite hikes / scrambles at Red Rock Canyon. Many of the trails we hiked included climbing and scambling among the rocks and cliffs. The climbing grades and trail descriptions come from the guide book referenced in the tips. Highly recommended for many of our trails are actually climbing routes and paths. This trip was in December and we required a jacket and outer shell. Remember this is Las Vegas, Nevada.We...
This is the track from the Pine Creek Trailhead and back through the wash. I have also hiked from Oak Creek Trailhead which saved a mile each way but required some non-trail desert hiking. I will post a GPS track when I find a proper on-trail option.
I'm glad the weather has stayed cool in the Las Vegas area. With business meetings tomorrow I used that as an excuse to make an early trip back to Red Rock Canyon. It seem hard to believe that such a place exists close to millions of people and yet I can hike for 7-8 hours and only see a couple of souls. One, I might add, an adventure runner blazing up the...
This short little hike in Red Rock Canyon leads to the upper portion of Lost Creek waterfall. The lower portion can be viewed along the Children's Discovery Trail, a easy information trail. This hike requires a little scrambling but can be done by most everyone. The traverse up around the cliffs looks more dangerous than it actually is. The upper waterfalls are spectacular when the water flow is high. This trip was in January,...
My son and I hiked to the peak on a nice November day. This hike startsout on the White Rock Loop Trail at the White Rock Springs parking lot goes south (clockwise on loop) for a half mile then turns north up the drainage and follows a route along ledges and chutes to the peak. The peak offers a unique view of Red Rock since it is centered between Calico Hills, La Madre Mountains...
White Rock Springs Peak is a beautiful warm up or cool down peak. Hiking the nine hour loop of Turtlehead and Graycap Peaks yesterday I was excited about coming back to Red Rock Canyon today. White Rock Springs Peak is short, but rugged enough, to keep anyone's interest. Enter the Red Rock Canyon scenic loop drive, and turn off at Red Rock Canyon Rd. There is a large pullout just off the...
With the high pressure system moving on, allowing warmer temperatures to once again settle into the valley I spent the morning watching the first horse show of the season. A beautiful day, cool in the shade, but riders and horses seemed to feel the warmth after the past two weeks of freezing temperatures. With my wife showing at 11:50 am, I began to search for a short summit peak that I could...
