For lovers of hiking, Punta del Este offers, among others, an excellent alternative - a walking around the Peninsula. Starting at the sculpture The Hand, in the beginning of Praia Brava, follow by the sidewalk to southeast, toward the end of the Peninsula, having at left the Atlantic Ocean, with some small beaches, and, at right, the urban landscape with its beautiful architecture - are almost 3 km. From there, the view of the Peninsula is amazing, with the Atlantic Ocean at the right, and the estuary of the Rio da Prata at the left - yes, the north boundary of the Rio da Prata is right there. Already returning, follow by the sidewalk along the waterfront of the Rio da Prata until reaching the Port of Yachts - on the way, can be seen the Gorriti Island and, in the summer season, cruise ships anchored offshore. Just after the Port of Yachts, if you wish to see somewhat of the
sophisticated commerce of Punta, you can go by the Calle Remanso, rather than continue by the waterfront sidewalk. At Calle Gaviotas, or at any of the following two, turn right. The next street is Avenida Gorlero - the main street of Punta. Cross it and proceed for one block more. Then, turn left toward the starting point.
In the summer, it´s very important to use a hat or a cap and solar protector, since the UV factor is frequently high or very high, even in cloudy days. Caution must be taken with the hydration too. Visited on Feb 17, 2008
