My wife and I headed out on the Blue Ridge Parkway to celebrate my birthday. This was the last of three hikes for the day. Crabtree Falls is a 7-mile detour from the Parkway.
I hiked this one with some good friends while on break from seminary. I think they mentioned that it has the quickest elevation change of any hike in Virginia. It was difficult, but well worth it. And to think that we did it in December. The weather was gorgeous.
Thanksgiving weekend with mom and dad in Staunton
We parked in the Crabtree meadows parking lot and walked east to nearby campsites. We then turned left on old fire trail and enter Priest Wilderness. Last time I was back here was in the early 80's on an ATV. This area is now closed, except to foot travel only. Park at the Upper Lot for Crabtree Falls and continue up the road on foot to the crossing of the AT. Turn left onto the AT and hike to a fantastic overlook just before the summit. Continue another few tenths of a mile to reach the summit if you desire (no view from the summit).About 4.5 miles round trip.
