The River Section of Pilot Mountain State Park is in a very remote section of countryside northwest of Winston-Salem (in contrast to Pilot Mountain's main section, which is right next door to U.S. Route 52).Trails are not super plentiful, but if you like taking walks along a lazy river, it's worth checking out. I went in winter to get better GPS reception; I imagine it would be gorgeous in the fall. In...

I went on a series of hikes at the River Sections of Pilot Mountain State Park northwest of Winston-Salem, NC.These are great get-away-from-it-all hikes: few people use this section of Pilot Mountain State Park, and the hiking is mostly easy to moderate with only a few mild climbs. Trip write-up to come at Two-Heel Drive.
Wanted to do all the trails in the Mountain Section of Pilot Mountain in one day. We took our time and enjoyed all the great views.
After leaving Hanging Rock, we went to Pilot Mountain. We parked at the visitor center and hiked up the Grindstone Trail to the
parking lot at the summit. We stopped at the Little Pinnacle Overlook
to take pictures of Pilot Mountain, then hiked the Jameokee Trail around
the Big Pinnacle and took the Ledge Springs Trail back to the
Grindstone Trail and back to the visitor center. It rained yet again on

The short Jomeokee Trail is an easy hike
that circumnavigates the big pinnacle of Pilot Mountain. The name of
the trail comes from the lexicon of the Saura Indians, who used the
mountain as a natural tower from which they could watch the
surroundings. Jomeokee also served as a landmark along the trail that
from Virginia to Georgia.
The orange-blazed trail starts just behind the restroom near the parking
lot, and drops...
This hike is a workout! With some pretty decent elevation gain/loss (you climb the last 500 feet in less than a mile), it is a hike for folks looking to have a bit more rugged, and bit more secluded, view of the mountainous geology. The yellow circle-blazed trail is about 2 miles as a loop. The trail starts out down the Jomeokee Trail, once you pass the little pinnacle you can turn...
WE went out for a short day hike at Pilot to check the views and watch the Rock Climbers for a bit. Very enjoyable spot and so close to home.
