Machu Picchu was everything I had hoped it to be and so much more.  I'm sure everyone says that it is very touristy, but if you are in Peru you just cannot pass it up. David and I got to the entrance gates just before sunrise.  For some reason people were sitting outside and not going in because there was too much fog--I don't understand those people.  We hiked along a path for...

Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru
2.5 miles
The train tickets were sold out until 7pm so we had about 5 more hours to kill in Ollantaytambo before we headed to the train station 30 minutes away.  Unfortunately we woke up early and had already seem most of the small town.  There was another hike up the mountain to some more ruins, and we decided that the best day to spend our time was exploring the ruins. It was pretty steep...

Machu Picchu, Cusco, Peru

This is the must see attraction of South America. The view is simply breathtaking, and the vastness and grandeur of the ruins is something you have to see to understand. From a trip I took through Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile early 2010, this is the one thing that I would have not missed anything for. The dawn is a must for anyone who wants to see the transition of the ruins through the day and...

Pisac, Cusco, Peru
8.7 miles
On our second day in Peru we left no time for resting and relaxing, and started our trip through the Sacred Valley with the final goal of Machu Picchu.  It was a Sunday and I had read that Pisac has a particularly good market on Sunday mornings, we we decided to head over to Pisac to peruse the market and hike the ruins up in the hills.  We walked to the bus...

Colca Canyon Two Day Trek

Tommy and I decided to do a two day trek through the Colca Canyon in Peru. The easiest way to get there and to explore the canyon is a guided tour through one of the numerous tour companies based in Arequipa. The canyon is supposedly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, however it does not appear as dramatic due to the shape of the walls resembling a valley, as opposed to...

David and I arrived in Cusco around 7 in the morning, took a taxi to the main square, the Plaza de Armas, and then had no idea how we were going to find out friend Thomas.  Luckily we found some wifi and received an email with information on the Hostel we would be staying at.After we stashed our backpacks we walked around a large market looking at various alpaca clothing.  Thomas and...

Astonishing ancient Inca settings surrounded by a dramatic mountain landscape. Literally, these people sculpted the mountains to make their living!

The valleys around Cusco that go into the Amazon are also lush and full of life. Many great endemic species.

Peru is excellent, a good combination of culture, history and adventure. Lots of places to visit and lots of things to do. A good approach is the so called "gringo trail", starting in Lima down the coast to Paracas, Ica, Nasca, Arequipa, Puno (Titicaca Lake), Cusco and back to Lima. In between there is a lot of sightseeing to do. Don't miss Cahuachi in Nasca, the Colca Canyon near Arequipa, Moray and Pisca near Cusco and the classic Inca Trail.
