Popular Trips in Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness
We entered the lesser used South entry over the saddle then down across the sand cove to the Wave then exited out the common route at Wirepass.
Nice trip through slot canyon to Buckskin Gulch. Made the trip with my kids.
Our second trip today in the Coyote Buttes South area. This time we took the drive out to the Cottonwood Teepees. Got there in late afternoon for some great views and hiking.
The unconfirmed story that I heard about the Wave is that of a German film crew taking pictures for a documentary 15 years ago. While setting up for a shoot in the Paria canyon area several members of the group climbed up a small dune and came across these beautiful formation. Limitations on GPS and camera battery life along with limited endurance of author, will require that the lower portion of this trip be posted later. Two "hard spots" are indicated on the trip record by the extra time. There is another hard spot down canyon. On my last visit there was an aging rope ladder for assistance. Hiking in pairs is recommended.
Hard to get to, but worth the effort. This is the alternative for folks (and locals) that don't get the permit for The Wave. Some would argue that this area is more interesting and beautiful than The Wave, but I wouldn't recommend trying to drive out to this area without a 4WD vehicle.
Buckskin Gulch is one of the premier slot canyons that flows into the immensely popular Paria Canyon. Although the tracklog cuts out about halfway down the total hike that we did, the pictures make up for the efficiency of GPS reception :)
