A couple of weeks ago, I was poking around EveryTrail looking for a fun hike.  I stumbled across Vaudesir's "Lake Del Valle to Murrieta Fall (Ohlone trail)", and immediately favorited it. A little more digging turned up tommangan's Ohlone Wilderness Trail Guide, who mentions that Murietta Falls only run after "several days of rain".  With the Bay Area getting nigh-endless rain for the last week, it seemed like an ideal time to...

After having spent the month of March ignoring activities outside of work, it was time to take a little time and go for a nice, long hike.  With the rains that we'd received over the last week, I figured that Murietta Falls might be running.  The forecast for the day of the hike was unsettled weather, turning wetter as the day progressed.  I decided to take my chances and get an early...

This weekend should have been a backpacking weekend but it got cancelled because of the rain that was forecast for Sunday. The initial plan was to hike the Ohlone Wilderness Trail from Lake Del Valle to Rose Peak on the first day, spend the night at Maggie's Half Acre, and go down to Sunol's visitor center on the second day. 10 miles each day.Instead, we decided to hike from Lake Del Valle to Murrieta Falls, and come back,...

Okay, so I'm a couple months late in posting this one. The first couple miles from the east end of the Ohlone Wilderness Trail are a real workout. I've come to refer to it as the Zombie Deer Trail because of the deer carcass that always seems to be in a different location every time I see it. Truth be told I think I'd rather deal with zombies than what I really...

We meander on the west side of Lake Del Valle. Deer Jaw trail and then follow the creek through the campgrounds.  Shooting Stars are just starting to come up.  A bald eagle flew overhead, but missed taking a picture of it.

6/6/2008 - 6/8/2008 Del Valle - Rose Peak (OT28 - OT40) This backpacking trip was provided by East Bay Regional Park. The park offers simialr backpacking trips each year. I decided to check out the first leg of the Ohlone trail in preparation to hike from Del Valle Reservoir to Sunol. The ranger at the entry booth said I could make it to Murietta Falls.  Oh yeah?  NO WAY!  I made it to Boyd Camps (plus a bit more).  Murietta Falls were another 3ish miles past the climb called "Big Burn".  Maybe next time...Things learned:  To do the full hike, you HAVE...

Great place to hike. Acres of land, and very few people. Most people go to Murietta falls, which is pretty spectacular after some heavy rain.

The wilderness itself has a 27 mile trail that starts in Sunol. A lot of people backpack it in a 2-3 day trip.

A permit is required, and it comes with a great map. The fee for the permit is $2.00, and it is good for a year.

Right in my backyard, but some of the most beautiful scenery in California. Very difficult hiking.
