For our daughter’s Spring break we took a weekend trip to meet her in Manhattan; we met up with other relatives and we wanted to visit museums and go shopping.   For Saturday afternoon, we met at our hotel at Columbus Circle, we walked through Central Park and spent the rest of the afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Then we took a taxi back to the hotel and had dinner.   It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon.  We were working...

This was a family walk across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn on a Friday in May.  We had our 5-year-old with us, and all we had to tell him was that the "Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory" was on the other side of the bridge to get him excited for the walk.It was a mellow stroll across the river (and above the cars zooming in both directions), but it was warm and very crowded. Drink...

Manhattan Walk -- Columbus Circle, SoHo, and Museum of Modern Art

For the second day of our Spring Break weekend in Manhattan with our daughter and other relatives, we planned to go shopping and visit another art museum. We started out at Columbus Circle, at our hotel.  Outside along 8th Ave at Central Park, HBO was filming something.  I didn’t get what they were filming, but they had a big film crew and pretty much didn’t mind if you were walking in and out of their shots as long as you looked...

My daughter works for Target and they put a team together to do the 2012 AIDS walk. I decided to tag along and we had a great time. The park is quite pretty albeit also quite crowded. I'll never give up the woods but this was a nice change of pace.

NYC can be really expensive, but it doesn't have to be. I read some good travel advice recently that advised getting a hotel that met your basic needs and reserve your travel budget for great food, experiences, shopping, etc, because you spend so little time in your hotel room. That is especially true in NYC. We got a deal on the Bryant Park Hotel, which is a very hip hotel right, popular with the fashion industry, across the street from the beautiful NY Library (think Sex and the City the movie) and the wonderful Bryant Park itself - great carousel, little restaurant huts, people watching - all a short, short walk from Times Square.

My daughter, myself and a close friend took the train down to NYC to visit the Tutankhamun exhibit next to the Time Square area. We walked from Grand Central to Discovery Center. Very low key day in the city. We were back on the train home by 4:30 pm. Great Day.

I only had a couple of days in New York but I packed it with everything and loved every minute. I walked around the financial district, took the ferry to the statue of liberty and ellis island, ate dinner at grand central station, spent 8 hours at the MET (a bit excessive) and went to the Cooper Hewitt museum of design.

One of the hidden highlights was the walking on the High Line, which used to be rails for train cars between the various meat packing buildings and is now a trendy walkway with benches, plants, and several restaurants. You don't want to miss it.
