On Saturday I was able to make a 2nd attempt at summiting Mt. Washington. I had made an attempt last fall but turned around to head down with my buddy Matt from back east. This time I went with Evan and his friend Matt from Seattle. We made plans for the climb just two days before hand with Saturday giving us the best weather window. When Evan and I climbed TFJ...
Short easy hike over a ~3000 year old lava flow in the Central Oregon Cascades. It starts off in the trees on an "island" amid the flow, and then quickly heads out over the lava flow. The terrain is amazingly eery. There are lava tubes to explore, etc.
Great hike in, made camp for the night planning to summit in the morning. Wind came up overnight and almost blew us of the ridge - didn't go down all night - in the morning we broke camp and returned - to windy for a safe climb.
The was a great trip.. something different from the normal hiking trip... hiking through a huge lava field to the top of Belknap Crater. It was a beautiful day, not too hot and great views of Mt Washington, Three finger Jack, Mt Jefferson, North and Middle sister and Black Crater..
This trip started at the hand trail-head at Scott lake. the trail to hand lake was about 1.6 miles.. not too difficult. Stopped by the Hand lake shelter to take pictures of Hand Lake. Great scenes of Mt Washington, North and Middle Sister.
This was a great hike. We found a trail that took you off the PCT and shot up to the ridge. Lots of trees down but fun to get to the top
Nice little day hike. The trip up to South Lake has some elevation change about 800 feet over 3/4 a mile. If your out of shape this can be a little tough. We took 10 kids 11-14 yr olds and they handled it well. Finding camping spots at South Lake is a little tough, but we found one down at north lake.
