Hike with Alison, Hank, and Andrew. Despite it being August the trail was obscured by snow at the higher elevations (due to the record snowfalls of 2008). My buddy Hank took the pix and I linked them to my GPS route. Pretty slick!Had some GPS issues in steep Zigzag canyon. Did not hke at 15 mph. (Honest!). also lost some track.
This is a great trip - awesome forests, ridges, rivers, and a big mountain, what else is needed?Day 0: We camped a couple of miles before the Timberline Lodge off an old logging road (well, actually, on the old logging road at a wide spot where it was blocked by a fallen tree).Day 1: We drove to the lodge, had a great breakfast: one of our party brought a camping stove and cooked...

Today I summited Mt. Hood, the highest point in Oregon at 11,240 feet. My climbing partners were Matt, Jason, and Drew from CMRU and Justin Broderson from OSU. It was a first summit for Drew, Justin, and I while Matt has been up several times before. We drove up late Saturday night to camp overnight in our vehicles in the Timberline Ski Area Parking lot. We arrived to find ourselves nestled among news...
I decided to make this hike as part of a camping trip to Sherwood campground. The nice thing about Sherwood is that you can walk to the trailhead from the campground and not have to pay the Forest pass day use fee. We combined this hike with picking up the three geocaches on the trail while we were at it. I took my two 8 year old kids and they did great...
Well, the forest service lady that I called told me that the trail was fine. But the last part of the switchbacks were covered in snow still. So we had to "scramble" up a bunch of loose rock and bolders.AMAZING views at the top though. All the way up to 8,400 ft!!
Incredible bang-for-the-buck hike, this one is! You start at the historic Cloud Cap Inn, built in 1889 at nearly 6000 feet above sea level on the eastern flank of Mount Hood. The Timberline Trail descends oh so briefly below the treeline here, and climbs immediately back up in either direction, on its circle around the mountain. A bit over a mile in, at the Tilly Jane trail junction, you turn to climb...
What a beautiful place! It's a relatively easy hike for being around Mt. Hood, but it sure has a great payoff: Ramona Falls is gorgeous! The hike itself is fun, but nothing amazing, almost all the way to the falls the way we went (on the southern side of the loop). After you've spent some time admiring the falls, the hike back on the northern side of the loop follows a lush,...
