Beautiful hike at Lake Dobson in the Mt. Field National Park. Starting at the ski field, passing along lots of emerald tarns and finally end with lots of rock hopping on the way back via K Cool to Lake Dobson. This hike is one of my all time favorites.
This is a variation to the usual Tarn Shelf walk as it leaves the main shelf to cross a saddle to the prominent peak overlooking Lake Seal. There is also a fault line that can be entered for a close up view. The walk does involve a bit of a trudge up to the Mawson Plateau and the return is back the same way. From Lake Dobson the good quality track follows the...
From Lake Dobson the good quality track follows the shoreline before climbing gently on the Urquhart Track to meet the jeep road. This 4wd track is not the ideal way to get to the alpine area of Mt Field, but at the moment is the only way up from this area. A walking track leaves this near a ski lodge and meets a boardwalk that goes most of the way to a...
The route to this valley can be varied and there is no definite way in or out, however it is generally easier to walk to the higher parts of Wombat Moor before descending into Monash Valley. One of the main attractions of the walk is the delightful flowers on the moor and in the valley. The displays of Richea scoparia from mid December to early to mid January are without doubt some...
With a fine forecast we set
off from Lake Dobson, took the Urquhart Track and then endured the Jeep 4WD
road to the ski huts. From here it became
pleasant walking again and we decided to head to Newdegate via Tarn Shelf,
joined the new boardwalk from Lake Newdegate and spent an enjoyable lunch break
amongst the white flowering Cushion Plants, Epacris and colourful
Scoparia. Return was via K Col and the
climb over the rocks to the Rodway...
Initially the track follows the river and passes an old washed out bridge still with a sign. This was the original way in before it was destroyed by floods.Soon after a turn is reached and the track crosses an open area of former farmland, then goes through groves of tree ferns and past immense swamp gums. The falls are within an area of old forest with moss-covered fallen logs, ferns and rainforest plants....
Initially the track to Lake Belcher is followed to the saddle below Mawson Plateau. This section is at times quite wet and much is over open moorland with the last short part through snowgum wood. From there it is a short climb , including parts over boulders to the plateau followed by a pleasant walk over the top. This plateau is quite exposed and navigation could be a problem in poor conditions. ...
The walk commences at the car park near Lake Fenton and crosses Lady Barron Creek. After about 1.1 km a junction is reached. Take the track to Seager's Lookout for good views. Retrace back to the junction and continue climbing steadily to Windy Moor which can be wet after rain. Cross Windy Moor and continue on to reach a junction at the base of Mount Field East. Climb Mount Field East over...
