Santa Clara County OSA Coyote Ridge Hike
by antonyw on Apr 18, 2010
Perry, California, United States
4.0 miles
Coyote Ridge is a closed area owned by the VTA and operated by the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority.  Each spring they offer docent led wildflower hikes in March and April.  This ridge hike was the last one of the 2010 season.  Signing up is easy,  just send an email to the coordinator, Teri in this case, and she sends detailed instructions on where to meet.  The morning starts off at the gates to...

Coyote Ridge - Coyote Spring Hike
by Vaudesir on Mar 27, 2010
Perry, California, United States
3.7 miles
Sammydee signed us up to a docent led hike to Coyote Ridge, an area managed by the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority and that is not open to the public. It can be accessed only a few times a year, by registration only. This was a very short hike in terms of distance, but it lasted half a day because we were taking many stops to learn more about the land and...

Coyote Ridge: Docent-led Hike
by croyle on Mar 27, 2010
San Jose, California, United States
3.7 miles
Coyote Ridge is a large preserve (other than the dump!) which is only open to hikers via the several docent-led hikes they're offering in March and April. I'm not sure if this is the first year they've had these hikes or not, but it's the first I've heard of them. For the most part, the various folks I hike with only join docent-led hikes when there is no other option, as in the...

Coyote Ridge: Docents and Checkerspots
by navratil on Mar 27, 2010
Perry, California, United States
3.8 miles
A docent-led hike to Coyote Ridge, ostensibly in search of the threatened Bay Checkerspot butterfly, but primarily as an excuse to see lots of wildflowers.Laurent (here) and Dave (here) did a great job of recapping the hike; I'll let their descriptions stand.  Go vote on their hikes instead of on this one :-)

El Toro

Morgan Hill, California, United States

El Toro is the striking symmetrical peak that rises from downtown Morgan Hill.  It's a landmark everywhere in southern Santa Clara County due to its shape and easy visibility.  You've probably seen it.  But have you been to the top?  Probably not .. it's private property, and going there is tresspassing.  Except one day every spring, when the Morgan Hill Historical Society sponsors a hike to the peak!  This is the STEEPEST...

Once a year you can climb to the top of El Toro, the unmissable central figure in the town of Morgan Hill.  This was the day!  Did I mention it's steep?

Kathleen said, ""The light is lovely in the gloaming of the evening which is my favorite time of the day."This trip is called Backwards because we started the trip where we usually finish. The trail ends in Morgan Hill on a street called Morning Star. We were interested in a house on that street last year.

Martin Murphy Trail at Harvey Bear Ranch is a paved 2.2 mile loop and is relatively flat. I was meeting some friends for an evening hike and arrived early so I thought I would take a quick loop around this trail and add a few pictures.

3.4 miles
Sharon and I hiked this loop in preparation for a geocaching class we were going to hold here.  We found the existing caches on the route and looked for spots for a few new ones.  This is a nice loop, with an interesting mix of terrain types.
