Gorgeous sunny day at Point Lobos. We took a nice easy fun hike today (still trying to break in my new hiking shoes). We saw 2 bunnies, a deer that let us walk very close, a millipede, seals, sea lions, and many birds. There was also a multitude of wild flowers in bloom, especially the wild iris' and sticky monkeys.

Point Lobos - Interior Trails

For this hike, I wanted to focus on the interior trails at Point Lobos and pick up a few places that I haven't covered so far. I define the interior trails as those that cut across the Reserve in contrast to the main trails that go around its perimiter. There are four main interior trails at Point Lobos, the Mound Meadows trail, the Pine Ridge trail, the Lace Lichen trail and the...

Point Lobos has been called the greatest meeting of land and sea in the world. I won't argue that here. It is also a nice place to do some easy hikes and if you like viewing birds and marine mammals it is well suited for that too.For this trip, I chose the main perimeter trails. They give you a good sense of what the reserve has to offer in a 4.5 mile...

Garzas Canyon / Terrace / East Ridge / Redwood Canyon / Garzas Canyon. Fun moderate hike to Redwood Canyon. Starts through a beautiful oak grove. Had to rock hop across Garzas creek four times, J fell in on the last crossing. A lot of wildflowers in bloom (even saw one lonesome Blue Bonnet). Small patch of Redwood trees and ferns with that incredible smell you only get in redwood groves.

What wonderful weather for a bike ride!  Cloudless sky, no fog, warm sun, brilliant light.  Our ride started at the Holiday Inn where we spent Friday night (to avoid having to get up so VERY early and drive down.)  The Google Map Bicycle Directions pointed us accurately to the bike path, uncongested at 9 am.  We pedaled past Wharf 2 and Breakwater and Lover's Point, where we did many scuba dives over...

Fall Birding at Point Lobos

Another jaunt at Point Lobos to check out the fall sights, birds, late flowers, and termites. I actually didn't plan on the termites, but should have because it was the first clear day after the first rain of the season. Termite hatches seem far less threatening when they aren't happening in your neighborhood. The birds also seemed to like the event.

This trip to Monterey Dunes (near Moss Landing) was short but sweet. We walked along the beach to the Salinas River where we saw lots of fishermen, and walked to Phils Fish market for a nice seafood dinner (the walk back wasn't as enjoyable, since it was dark, windy, and I was stuffed!)

Monterey Bay in my opinion is best off season (Fall - Winter) when the crowds are gone, traffic is sparse and the locals are out and about. Prices are reasonable for hotels and you can get into the best places to eat.

Monterey Bay is a great area south of San Francisco. I have stayed in Monterey Dunes more times than I can remember (my family has a house there), and we often frequent Moss Landing, Canary Row, and the Aquarium. There are a number of nice hikes, walks, kayak routes, and more in this area, but overall I think of it as a nice place to relax, escape city life, and to see some historical California landmarks (and of course, eat lots and lots of seafood!)

Go all the time! Love driving south to Carmel taking 17 mile drive. My daughter finds the tide pools on 17 mile drive the best!
