Day hike to Lake Winnemucca.Hike writeup at Two-Heel Drive. This a great little day hike within easy driving distance of Lake Tahoe. We drove up from San Jose so it was a bit more of a haul. It's very easy to find, GPS says it's about 2.5 miles to the lake (vs. 1.5 on the maps). Uphill all the way in though not terribly steep; downhill all the way back. It's very easy...

Meiss Meadows Snowcamping

Snowcamping | 2.0 miles
Meiss Meadow is a great place for snow camping. It is easily reachable from the snow park on Rt 88 (first one on the left after Kirkwood ski resort when driving East). Took us 2 hrs to walk in at a leisurely pace and 1 hr and 15 minutes to walk out at a faster pace. The area around the meadow gets a lot of snow, making it a...

The Desolation Dozen returned from their trip to Mammoth Mountain and decided to do an easy hike today. I, however, decided to make challenging for the Jindo dog and me.  When the rest of the group headed back I headed up to the nearest peak. Peak bagging is not usually my thing but the scenery and rock formations were just too tempting.

Went on my first backcountry ski trip of the season at Carson Pass. We skinned out to the saddle between The Sisters and Round Top to see if the bowl to the south was skiable. Not really-- it was windy, thin, and wind-crusted. After skiing back down to Winnemucca Lake to have lunch, we decided to try and ski down Elephant's Back. The first chute we looked at on Elephant's Back looked...
