Mission Peak, one of the most popular East Bay hikes, is a great
workout with 2,000 feet of climb in two miles and spectacular views of
San Francisco Bay and the Diablo Range once you reach the summit. Most
hikers take the so-called Hidden Valley Trail to the summit, but there is a far more
rewarding path to the top along the Horse Heaven Trail.

I hiked the hard way -- up Horse Heaven Trail -- at Mission Peak Regional Preserve from the Stanford Avenue entrance just off Mission Boulevard in Fremont. I also did this to test my new Garmin eTrex Vista CX unit to see how it would work with my iMac ... it\'s always fun trying to make PC stuff work on a Mac. Another early morning hike up Mission peak. No fog this morning, so the lights of the Cities were shining brightly. I came back down the main fire road, instead of Horse Heaven Trail this time, so that I could see what I missed. The fire road up is like a highway, with hundreds of people making the ascent as I was hiking out.
One of the most popular East Bay Hikes in Fremont - the parking lot is almost always full unless you start your hike before 7am on weekends. My apologies for taking the short-cuts - it began to rain and we ended up shooting down - and then later realized that the path was protected. I am remorseful. The last 300 feet gain is through some rough terrain - though you are rewarded with fabulous...
Hiking Mission Peak could be quiet an interesting experience besides its infamous steep grade. Hiking in clouds is certainly one of them. When the bay area is occasionally covered by low clouds appearing at altitudes between 1,000 feet and 2,500 feet in early mornings, you may enjoy going in and getting out of clouds in the progress of summiting Mission Peak. Once you get to the top, the view is marvellous with blue sky and cloud sea. Taking this trip...
A quick hike to the top of Mission Peak from the Stanford Ave Staging Area. The climb is the "easy" fire road (Hidden Valley Trail), with the descent taking the southern, shorter, steeper Horse Heaven Trail, with the natural continuation down the ridge to meet the Peak Meadow Trail.Note: The "new" Horse Heaven Trail is Very Steep, but you no longer have to make the muddy spring crossing near the top.
Hiked Mission Peak with Jaime and Andrew. Reached the summit in under 1 hour and 30 minutes while hiking up from trails on the southern side. Trails (Peak Meadow & Horse Heaven) on the southern side are less popular and crowded than the ones (Hidden Valley) on the northern side but more strenuous and challenging. The route we hiked:Trailhead at Stanford -> Hidden Valley trail -> Peak Meadow trail -> Horse Heaven trail -> Peak trail...
Loop hike to the summit of Mission Peak from the end of Stanford Ave. in Fremont, CA. The landscape here is very open affording you with excellent views for almost the entire hike. But be aware that the lack of shade can make this a very warm hike in the summer.
