McNee Ranch State Park

California, United States
 (1 vote, 1 review)
McNee Ranch State Park is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of the United States, near the unincorporated community of Montara, California in San Mateo County. Its highest point rises to 1,898 feet above sea level. An unpaved fire road, the North Peak Access Road, accessible from the Pedro Mountain Road, provides access to the summit by hikers. The mountain has an extensive biodiversity especially on the serpentine soils of the lower slopes where such endangered species as Hickman's potentilla and San Mateo thornmint, Acanthomintha duttonii, are found. On rare occasions light snow has dusted the summit. On clear days the summit provides spectacular views of much of the San Francisco Bay Area.  The ranch is part of Montara State Beach.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McNee_Ranch_State_Park

Joe, Joel and I went on a coastal adventure.  South Bay temps were forecast for the high 80s, but the coast was foggy and cool.  I was astonished by the variety of flowers and butterflies we saw along the hike ... fantastic by South Bay standards for July, where everything is already scorched and most flowers long gone.  The trail was steep in spots, but no big deal.  The views and flowers...

Montara Mountain towers over the Pacific Ocean a couple miles south of the city of Pacifica. The hike to the top is a bit of a slog, but the view is wonderful on days when the coast is clear. I was fortunate to go up on one of these days. My hike was 9.4 miles with 2500 feet of vertical climb (from visiting three summits at the top of the mountain, which...

Rather short but strenuous hike in small park next to Pacifica. Going up and down and up and down back.

Hiking to the top of Mt. Montara on the coast. An amazingly clear day with record temperatures around 70 degrees for January (sorry East Coast friends & family!). Carrying a pack with 35 Lbs. to train for the Bataan Memorial hike in March.

This day was partly cloudy with occasional fog blowing through the coastal hills, obscuring the view. It was windy and cool. The North Summit was ordained with unsightly communications towers, detracting from any anticipated reward for the effort of getting there. The most strenuous part of the climb occurs between 25 - 50% of the way up. This is where the first time upward bound hikers ask the descending crowd how much...

Sunny and warm, ascending up through San Pedro Valley County Park onto the rugged Montara Mountain path to the McNee Ranch State Park fire road for the descent down to Montara State Beach. Once passing over into McNee Ranch State Park the weather was completely different: windy low blowing clouds/fog. The beach was cold enough to require a windbreaker. GPS recording was irregular - hense the inaccuracy in mileage and speed on...

We took Gray Whale Cove Trail along the coastline to Old San Pedro Mountain Trail and took that for another mile and a half (or so) and then tracked back the same way to the parking area. It was a fairly easy hike with a mild slope. Unfortunately it was foggy the whole time, so we missed all the spectacular views, but what we could see was very pretty. On the way back the fog had cleared a little and we could see some awesome waves crashing on the beach. We want to come back again sometime soon and do one of the routes to the North Peak (on a sunny day).
