Three night trip down the Lost Coast in California. The hiking through sand and rock took more of a toll on my knees and feet than I expected, but it was still an amazing adventure. Read about it on my blog.
After leaving a car at Mattole trailhead the prior day, we set out from the Black Sands Trailhead at 9:30am. The weather was sunny and calm. The common wisdom is to hike the Lost Coast Trail north to south to keep the wind at your back, but one of our party had already hiked it in that direction before, so we decided to go the opposite way. The Kings range is what really makes the lost coast unique. This big mountain range develops very few miles from the pacific coast, giving an outstanding contrast between ocean and mountains. The road to the trailhead is unpaved but very well maintained; any vehicle can make it up there, no need for a 4 wheel drive.
