Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro in north-eastern Tanzania is the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft). It is a popular mountain for travelers and climbers. There are several routes by which to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, namely, Marangu, Rongai, Lemosho, Shira, Umbwe and Machame. Of all the routes, Machame is by far the most scenic albeit steeper route up the mountain, which can be done in 6 or 7 days. The Rongai is the easiest camping route and the Marangu is also easy, but accommodation is in huts. As a result, this route tends to be very busy and ascent and descent routes are the same.

7 day Machame trip. Almost perfect weather troughout. Great summit night/day - maybe got as could as -6C, but not much less.  My solar recharger failed me on the 2nd to last day so my Garmin 405 missed the last few meters of the climb and the decent. Here is the beginning of the trip. The full version would not load on the site, you can get the full version day by day  http://sandatravels.wordpress.com/2009/06/07/kilimanjaro-tanzania-june-7-day-26-kilimanjaro-climb-day-1/ Kilimanjaro, Tanzania...

A seven day trip up Kilimanjaro on the Machame route. I used IMG guides from Seattle. Great trip, extremely well run climb.  I would not recommend trying to do the climb in few days, but the time summit day came on Day 6, we were getting pretty used to the thin air of 16K'. Our group of 12 climbers all made the summit.

Kilimanjaro Machame route Climb

Great , safe, simple climb of around 15000ft. in 4days. 2 days for coming down. Good endurance test! You cross all climatic zones on the earth in 4 days. This was my dream for many years. This kind of trek is not possible in Himalayas also because there you start walking at around 9,000 ft.and nearly all hiking routes go not above 18000 ft . Any thing more than that increases risk in Himalayas....

Here's the Machame route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Most of this track is genuine GPS waypoint tracking. The 6 day trek campsites are indicated.

Our climb was one of the countless (actually about 35,000) treks up Kilimanjaro that occur each year.  Some 70-80% of these make the summit, mostly those who take the longer, slower routes.  The trek begins on the lower slopes in tropical rainforests, passes through moorlands and scrub to reach an arctic desert at the summit.  Kilimanjaro is 99% hiking with the balance being scrambling up or down rock, so no special skills...
