Two Willderness Mystery part 1

What does the narrow corridor between the two parts of the Strawberry Crater Wilderness Area look like?  Why is it here? I got instructions from the volunteer at Sunset Crater.  The Forest roads are not mapped and marked identically.  I followed the most traveled track. The volunteer mentioned that "Dead man's Mesa is aptly named. " They have found bodies out there!"

So I got my arthritic body all jazzed up on the last of my pain prescription and went for it.  This is the last part of the hike.  I went clockwise around the old volcano.  A hole in the rim probably formed when a chunk of soft rock got surrounded by hot ignious material eroded over the years and made a window.  I hereby name the window in the rock, atop the rim of Strawberry Crater, Chuck's Arch! Charles Bates...

Strawberry Crater Wilderness Mystrery pt.I

Why is Strawberry Crater Wilderness in two parts?  Is the narrow gap between the two parts for "trammeling?" RFC has a picture of lots of presumably ATV tracks located in the wilderness?   Is his picture accurately paced?

Krista and I decided to spend our New Years in Flagstaff. We spent New Years Eve downtown and watched the Great Pine Cone Drop at the Hotel Weatherford. The following day we decided to head to the Nordic Center to try Cross Country Skiing. We did that in the morning, then we traded in our skis for snow shoes and spent the afternoon snowshoeing.

Nice hike up the first 2.9 miles of the Weatherford Trail. Would like to go all the way to Humphreys Peak someday but that's some serious mileage! We do get up into the aspens and while there's now fall color yet, it is still beautiful and a welcome change from Sedona.

The initial plan was to hike the Inner Basin Trail and go all the way to the top of Humphrey's Peak, but road closures to Lockett Meadow forced us to alter our plans and hike Weatherford Trail. With a large group of hikers at various levels of fitness, it took a while for everyone to arrive at the Doyle Saddle. By the time we made it to the Fremont Saddle there really was...

Weatherford Trail to Humphrey's Peak
by smccharen on Sep 16, 2012
Elden Pueblo, Arizona, United States

This trail was so enjoyable, especially in Sept!  Gorgeous weather, we really lucked out, Humphrey's Peak had been shrouded in clouds and inaccessible for about one month prior to our trip due to thunder and lightning storms.  Beautiful wooded trail, we walked through ponderosa pines, aspen, then above the tree line through what looked like a moonscape of black then red lava rock.  This was a LONG day hike!!
