first hiked to lost horse mine, then up to the cool viewpoint above the mine for the sunrise, continued on and climbed cross country up to the summit of lost horse mountain (5282) for an incredible view of all of joshua tree and san gorgonio and san jacinto. back to the loop and to the lang mine and then optimist mine and around through the wash where we saw a speckled rattlesnake...

Nick, Derek, and I took an overnight trip into Joshua Tree National Park. Despite miles of off-trail wandering and camping in a designated day-use area (oops) we managed to survive. Here's the pictures to prove it. A fabulous weekend for wildflowers, both the annuals that filled the low Mojave desert and the cactus, which all seem to be blooming early this year.
This is a really neat hike as there are a number of artifacts from the old mining days along the way. It is not real well known, so it is not very busy with hikers like Lost Horse Mine, but it is easy and neat enough other people are on the trail.
Needed a quick break from reports, so off to Berdoo for a morning ride. The trail is a bit more rough than on previous trips. It looks like there were several recent rock slides.
excellent short touristy type loop hike with many views of great boulders, cliffs, and lots of rock climbers.
took an early morning hike to the lookout (4465) for a nice view to start another wonderful day in joshua tree.
hiked around this rock climbing area and played around on many boulder formations and a few caves.
started at the dirt parking lot which is also the second trailhead for the wall street mill and just after the main parking area for barker dam. hiked to the ruins of the pink house at the old wonderland ranch and the down the wash to the astrodomes climbing area, then back just at dusk.
