Inside Passage

Alaska and British Columbia, United States and Canada
 (2 votes, 2 reviews)
The Inside Passage is a roughly 1,300 mile water route from Puget Sound in Washington State, up the Pacific Coast of British Columbia, to Skagway Alaska. Every summer season a handful of sea kayakers tackles the route that takes around 80 days to complete. There are a few towns and small villages along the route where food supplies can be replenished and contact with the outside world can be made. The route is almost wholly within a rainforest so long periods of rain, mist, and low clouds are the norm. Most of the route is somewhat protected from ocean swells rolling in off the Pacific Ocean by an almost unbroken chain of large islands. There are however a couple of spots along the route that are exposed to the full force of the Pacific. Passage through these spots must be timed for periods of calm seas. Kayakers attempting this route must be experienced and able to take care of themselves in any situation as help from the outside can not be depended on in an emergency.

Went with friends from Venture Tonia and Lisa. The trail is a steady climb up and has steps lots of steps the last half mile.  The falls are definitely worth the climb. The Mist was very relaxing on a hot day.

Pretty easy hike up along old logging roads, then a well-marked trail. We left things a bit late to get much further along the ridge -- and ended up doing the last 40 minutes of the descent in the dark. But it was a beautiful sunny day with great views and quite a few other hikers along the route. Jan's boots didn't fit very well and she ended up losing her big...

For the last 3 years I've been working my way up the Inside Passage in my inflatable kayak. I started in Vancouver and have gotten to Bella Bella. I hope to continue all the way to Skagway, vacation time permitting.

This is a great place to paddle but can be very remote. You also have to know the weather. From the Discovery Islands up to Cape Caution, in summer you will experience daily harsh north west winds that will slow your progress and generally kick you off the water by lunchtime. North of Cape Caution, even in August you can get weeks and weeks of heavy rain.

There is tons of wildlife, sooo many humpbacks from Telegraph Cove northwards they will almost not even draw your attention after a while. It is also grizzly country and you can go see them on the river valleys eating salmon, along with wolves, if you time it right.

If you haven't kayaked in this type of wilderness environment before then it's probably best to start in Vancouver and work northwards as there are towns along the way where you can resupply if needed. After Telegraph Cove there is nothing except fishing lodges until Bella Bella.

This is a great place to go boating, but be ready for harsh weather - even in summer. It was August and we had cold strong winds and fairly rough water. I loved it, but not he best day I've had out there.
