Located in the city of Huntington Beach along a two-mile stretch between the Santa Ana River and Beach Blvd, this broad, sandy beach is popular for surfing, fishing, volleyball, bonfires, bicycling, running and walking. At the south end of the park is a nesting sanctuary for the endangered California Least Tern.
The beach is open every day from 6am to 10pm. Lifeguards patrol the beach year round, and Huntington State Beach is where the State Lifeguard Training is held.

Recreation
Multi-Use Trail
This wide, paved path extends the entire length of the beach, joining paths that extend north through the city beach and beyond, and to the south with Newport Beach. The trail is popular with bicyclists, runners, walkers, and roller skaters.
Surfing
Huntington State Beach is south facing, and when swells combine from the northwest and south, the surfing is excellent. Shifting sandbars and steep breaks create dangerous conditions not recommended for beginners.
Swimming
Swimming is popular, but the underwater topology can create dangerous rip currents at this beach, warranting extra caution. Lifeguards patrol the beach year round, and the lifeguard towers are manned seasonally (generally Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Fishing
Surf fishing is allowed with a California fishing license, as long as there are no swimmers nearby. Cabezon, croaker and perch are a few of the fish commonly caught here.
Fire Rings
Bonfires are allowed only in designated fire rings, located across most of the beach. This is a popular evening activity, particularly in the summer. Fire rings are available on a first come, first serve basis, and people often arrive early in the day to stake their claim.

California Least Tern Sanctuary
This nesting sanctuary is located at southern end of Huntington State Beach between the Talbert Channel and the Santa Ana River. This fenced area is a protected nesting ground for the California Least Tern -- an endangered species -- as well as the Snowy Plover.
The Least Tern migrates to Mexico during the winter months, but returns to nest in the spring, providing a great opportunity for bird watching.

Community Trips
Huntington Beach is normally crowded in the warm summer months, but it was practically deserted on this November weekend. An easy but scenic walk.
