Hawaii - Big Island

Hawaii, United States

Hawaii, or "The Big Island," is a fascinating and constantly-evolving place thanks, in part, to the regular lava flow. Beyond its beautiful beaches, the youngest in the Hawaiian islands chain also features some amazing natural and man-made wonders, such as:
- Mauna Kea, a mountain so high that it frequently collect snow and is home to one of the most renowned observatories for astronomy
- The southern-most point in the United States, called "Ka Lae" or South Point
- Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes
- A black sand beach called Punaluu
- Horseback riding, ranches and some of the richest farmland in the world in Waimea
- Petroglyphs, historic temples and world-class resorts on the Kohala coast
- Has all but 2 of the world's climate zones

A short hike down (and back up) to Captain Cook Monument, in beautiful Kealakekua Bay.At the north end of Kealakekua Bay, British explorer Captain Cook was killed in 1779. A monument commemorating the event was erected in 1874 close to the spot Cook is believed to have fallen. Accessing this monument is not very easy. You either have to take a boat, a kayak, or hike to it. We chose to hike...

Kilauea Iki Trail - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hiking inside a crater, on a solidified lava lake, is a unique experience. It can be done in the Kilauea Iki crater, right at the heart of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.My dad and I have been meaning to hike this trail. As a matter of fact, we came back to the park despite the distance (about 3 hours of driving from the Kohala Coast) just for this hike, and it was...

Kiholo Bay - Wainanalii lagoon

A nice exploration of the Kiholo Bay, including its amazing Wainanalii lagoon. My dad and I decided to explore Kiholo Bay (in the Kohala area) on a very nice afternoon. Kiholo Bay extends roughly from the "private" Luahinewai Pond in the south, to the Wainanalii lagoon in the north, roughly distant from each other by 1.5 miles. We accessed the bay using a trail that starts along Queen Kaahumanu Highway. This trail goes through...

An easy hike with my dad to check out one of the largest collections of prehistoric petroglyphs. This is a very easy hike in terms of distance (less than 1.5 miles round trip) and elevation (it's flat) but it can be tough because it's hot and dusty, and because the roots of the kiawe trees keep trying to make you trip (watch out for this trees. They are beautiful but they have long...

Kilauea Iki Trail, Volcano National Park, Hawaii

It was a rainy day on the volcano.  Unfortunately, some portions of the park are closed due to large amounts of Sulfur Dioxide emissions.  Walking along the bottom of a volcanic crater was incredible.

Makalawena is the best beach in Kona.  You have to work to get there, but when you get there it's amazing.  Many times I get there before everyone else.  The old road down is between the 89 and 88 mile markers, and it's a fun bike ride down.  The hike isn't bad, but way quicker on the bike.  I went in one way and out the other.  The out route is probably...

Rode the bicycle portion of the Ironman Triathalon Route from Kailua-Kona to Hawi. Nice route with mostly nice shoulders or little traffic.

Had some great trips to the beach, many included some hikes in. I like the dry side and love the walks across lava.
