Hanging Rock State Park is the best hiking locale with in easy reach of North Carolina's Triad region (Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem). It also has abundant rock-climbing opportunities. The park also has a campground, a lake, a swimming beach and canoe rentals. Rock formations of the small Sauratown Range are impressive, and the view from the old ranger tower location atop Moore's Knob is the best in the region. It also features several of the prettiest waterfalls in this region of North Carolina.

I hiked to the four main waterfalls (and one minor one) at Hanging Rock State Park northwest of Winston-Salem, NC. Trip writeup at Two-Heel Drive.(Note most of the traveling on this GPS track is driving between sites at the park; the falls are all within a half mile of the nearest parking lot.)

This is a pretty cool loop, starting near the Hanging Rock lake and heading up to Moore's Knob, then going down and heading back up to the parallel ridge and finally capping it off with a jaunt to Hanging Rock and returning where I started from. (Funny how loops work that way).Trip writeup at Two-Heel Drive.
Pretty fall-colors hike to Moore's Knob at Hanging Rock State Park northwest of Winston-Salem, NC. This hike started out from the Tory's Den Trailhead, which adds four miles to the standard 4.9-mile Moore's Knob Loop Trail, a favorite of local hikers. Moore's Knob has look-out tower with 360-degree panoramas of the surrounding terrain. The view is awesome, the best in the region by far. Trip write-up to come at Two-Heel Drive. ...

Moist and misty hike at the park northwest of Winston-Salem. This was my first hike to Cook's Wall. It was overcast, windy and rainy up there so I'm not sure I ever actually saw the Wall. Winter after a rain is a cool time to hike up here -- it seems very clean and shiny despite all the leaves having left the trees. Hike writeup at Two-Heel Drive.

I did the classic Moore's Knob Loop with a diversion around the shore of Hanging Rock Lake. The park is celebrating its 75th anniversary, so I went along to join the festivities. I doubled back through the campground to find the trail and continued the loop. Trip Writeup at Two-Heel Drive.
