This hike has a bit of everything, including an AMAZING hike through a large bamboo forest, and a stunning waterfall, as well as several "sacred" pools that could be good for swimming (although not recommended by the park).
After parking my car at a trailhead at about 8k ft, I hitched a ride to the summit at about 10k ft. I started my run near the visitors center and entered the crater on the Sliding Sands Trail, then cut across the crater floor to the Halemau`u Trail and followed it back to my car. Amazing run!
fantastic little hike down to the top of the first cinder cone. Air was as still as could be, and completely silent within the crater-valley. Very few folks on the trail, too. Combined the silence of being in a closed room all by yourself, with the expansiveness of in a massive valley, being able to see for miles. Amazing experience.
Did a gorgeous hike on the Sliding Sands trail and then the Halemau'u Trail ... Parked at the trailhead for the Halemau'u Trail (at about 8000 feet), hitched a ride to the summit, then started hiking at about 11 AM. Total trip time was just over 5 hours, with about 4 hours of walking. It was surprisingly warm (in the mid-high 60s). Dropped down to about 6500' inside the crater (from 10,000'...
Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui -- We hiked in from Halemau'u trailhead to stay in the Kapalaoa cabin for two nights. The cabin can also be reached from the trailhead at the Haleakala summit; that route is shorter but with more vertical to climb on the way back out.
A dayhike in Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui, from the Kapalaoa backcountry cabin up to the summit and back. Most people would be more likely to do this in reverse, since you can drive a car to the summit.
My final hike here on the Island of Maui. Descending 1,600' in 2.5 miles down into the crater among the cinder cones. When I started I at 9AM I found that I was alone after the first little overlook. When I made it down to split rock. I found thatI was the only soul for miles. It was so quite and bereft of sound that it was almost eerie.
Waimoku falls. I was under time constraint so I did this two 3 hour hike in 2 hours and 10 minutes. The coolest part of this trip, besides the falls, was the walk through the bamboo forest.
We hiked the Pu‘uwai Trail to the high falls.
