This route shows the return trip from Laurel Gap Shelter to Mt. Sterling Gap in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We took a side trip to bushwhack to the top of 6155-foot Big Cataloochee Mountain.
This trip was intended to be a two-night trip, but when I woke up after the first night at Tricorner Knob Shelter, snow was coming down an inch an hour. Easy walk from the visitor center to town. This is one of the only two trails in the Great Smoky Mountain National Forest that pets are allowed on. Pets are not allowed in the forest.It follows a stream down to Gatlinburg and is realitively level all the way.
