Prior to our climb of Kit Carson Peak and Challenger Point, we took some time off to explore the upper reaches of Willow Creek.  You'll discover a tarn at the base of Kit Carson Mountain, and you'll be rewarded with views of the drainage, as well as an abundance of wildflowers, rich in the water-soaked tundra. You'll stumble through the willows, and climb a few shelves before reaching the upper Willow Creek lake. ...

Our climb of the two the 14ers in the Sangre de Cristo Mtns, named after famous explorers began with a warmup climb of Mt Yale (14,196') in Buena Vista.  Kit Carson offered his services as a guide to John Fremont, and his 5-month journey of exploration, paving the way for westward expansion. The space shuttle "Challenger", the namesake of the 14er on the same ridge, flew 85% of NASA's space shuttle's missions of...

Great Sand Dunes National Park

A beautiful day, but sometimes windy enough you had to turn your back to the wind or risk getting a mouthful of sand. It's hard work climbing these dunes; sometimes the sand is packed so you stay on top of it, but usually not. Some of the slopes are amazingly steep.

The park was impressive, however the pass was closed @ the 4th water crossing...not much of a challenge, make sure you air down tires

Usually windy. I had to wear sandals on the Dunes because the sand was so hot. Beautiful and out of the way. The nights are full of stars and quiet.

Man, does that sand get hot. Harder to trek across the dunes than you might think...sand fills your shoes, and if you try to take them off you discover just how hot it is. Unique.
